GOALBALL

Goalball was created in 1946 to aid the rehabilitation of visually impaired war veterans and has been a Paralympic sport since 1980. It is played indoors on a court 18 by 9 meters, divided into two halves with goals spanning the width at each end. Each team has three players on the court wearing opaque eyeshades to ensure fairness between players with varying degrees of vision loss. The ball contains bells so players can track it by sound. Players roll the ball along the floor, aiming to score by getting it past the opposing team’s defense, who block using their bodies. The game lasts 24 minutes, split into two halves, with teams scoring points for goals and facing penalties for rule violations. Goalball fosters inclusion by allowing sighted players to compete fairly using eyeshades and is practiced worldwide with official classifications for different levels of visual impairment.
