Dis+Abled Guts

Guts originated in 1958 in Michigan as an extreme frisbee competition emphasizing courage and precision. The game is played between two teams, usually of five players, on a rectangular court, with players trying to throw the disc in a way that is difficult for the opponents to catch cleanly with one hand. The receiving team must catch the disc without it touching the ground or using two hands, while the throwing team loses points for out-of-bounds throws. Matches continue until a predetermined score is reached, often 21 points, with gameplay highlighting speed, reflexes, and hand-eye coordination. Adaptations can include softer or larger discs, auditory or high-contrast discs, gloves, and safe throwing methods to accommodate players with disabilities. Rules can be modified to allow two-handed catches, body-assisted catches, stationary throws, or mixed-ability teams, ensuring everyone can participate and enjoy the game. Guts promotes inclusion, teamwork, strategy, and active participation while keeping the sport exciting and accessible.
