Dis+Abled Powerchair Soccer

Powerchair football was developed in France in the 1970s to provide a competitive and inclusive sport for people with physical disabilities. The game is played on a gymnasium court with four-player teams, using electric wheelchairs equipped with metal foot guards to control and strike an oversized ball. Players aim to score goals while respecting rules like the ‘2 on 1’ distance and spin kick safety zones to reduce contact. The sport is fast-paced and strategic, with set plays, hit-ins, and corner kicks adding tactical depth. Equipment and court dimensions can be adapted for recreational or inclusive play, such as using lighter balls, wider goals, or smaller courts. Powerchair football encourages teamwork, strategy, and coordination while remaining accessible to players of varying abilities. Coaches, referees, and support staff ensure safety, skill development, and a positive, inclusive environment for everyone involved.
